LetterlandIn our classroom, we explore literacy using the Letterland curriculum. Letterland is a unique, phonics-based approach to teacher reading, writing, and spelling to 3-8 year olds. The Letterland characters turn plain letter shapes in child-friendly pictograms that provide memory hooks for all letter shapes and sounds.
You may be asking, “What exactly is phonics and how can I help my child learn it?” Phonics is the teaching of letter shapes and sounds and how to use them to read and write. In our class, we have now learned all of the characters and their sounds! Your child loves to act out their sounds and actions. And now, you can even help them at home! I am sending home a sheet that lists all of the Letterland characters pictures and names. All you have to do is go over them with your child. They already know the sounds, now they just need to practice! Once you see they have the sounds down, you can talk about each character’s letter. You can even help them sound out beginning and ending sounds in words. For example, “What sound do you hear at the beginning of ball? B-b-ball. That’s right! B-b-Bouncy Ben!” You are your child’s first teacher. These activities are just another way you can support your child in their school experience to strengthen the skills they are learning in school. We can’t wait to see the progress your child makes as we work together to provide them with a strong foundation for reading and writing! |
